Echinacea

Botanical Name: Echinacea angustifolia, Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea pallid

Echinacea is also known as snakeroot because of the roots snake like appearance. It has been used for centuries to treat wounds and infections. The leaves, seeds or roots of this herb can also be chewed to alleviate toothaches. Echinacea has become a popular herb around the world due to its natural immune support properties. A significant amount of scientific studies have documented the chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical applications of Echinacea. Echincaea has healing, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and nonspecific, immune-stimulant action, predominantly through the stimulation of fibroblasts (cells involved in tissue repair) and activation of phagocytosis (the process of bacterial scavenging by special white blood cells).

Parts Of The Plant Used:

Echinacea products generally contain a mixture of root, leaves, stem and seed sections of the plant.

  • Roots: These are the most commonly used part of the herb as they have a higher concentration of volatile oils.

  • Leaves: This part of the plant contains more polysaccharides which trigger the stimulation of the immune system.

  • Seeds: The seeds if chewed and held within the mouth, create a strong antibacterial, numbing and fuzzy effect on the tongue and cheeks. Seeds are used frequently for ulcers, gum and tooth infections.
